Parasites and Krispy Kreme Donuts

The Anopheles mosquito (picture) abdomen is full of blood that will nourish her eggs, the female takes to the air.  Her next landing may be a dangerous one...for the human who receives her bite.  The female Anopheles mosquito is the only insect capable of carrying the human malaria parasite.  The parasite then travels to the liver---where they can lay dormant for as long as a year or up to even five years.   When the parasite mature, they leave the liver and infect your red blood cells. This is when the person typically develops malaria symptoms.  If an uninfected mosquito bites you at this point in the cycle, it will become infected with your malaria parasites and can be spread to the next person it bites. It's such a tiny little insect...but it carries a deadly disease if not treated.

Sometimes before Sept 2011 an Anopheles mosquito  bit my husband so not only did  we pack our few belongings and head back to the US but unbeknown  to Ace his liver was packing this parasites just waiting to release in his blood stream.  The last week of August 2012, one year later he begin to get sick, thinking he was just run down.. Very soon he was so weak he could not stay awake,  having shakes and  fevers  till  it spiked dangerously high so to the  emergency room we went.  We  both thought this might be malaria but the medical staff did not think so even though his spleen was enlarged and white and red blood cell way down.  They admitted him thinking he might have West Nile virus.  Test after test was ran, strong antibiotic were given but still his fever and chills were becoming worst and worst to the  point he shook the hospital bed till they could hear it in the hall.   After three days the blood work came back positive for malaria.  Finally they started treating him with an eradication treatment to kill the parasites in his liver and spleen.  He now is home resting, still on medication for another 7 days.

I had lots of time to pray and think about how is God going to get glory out of this.  We both got to witness to a lot of curious nurses and doctors who took care of him who wanted to know  where he had lived to get malaria and why would we live there?  Once again we realized these are temporary bodies we walk around it.   Makes one want to enjoy every moment God gives us.

A friend wrote this to me during this latest trial. " During a test" the Teacher is always silent".  So if you are going through a stretch of time and you feel God is silent maybe it is a test you have to pass.   We have had those trials when we thought we were not hearing from God but this one was different.  God calmed my anxious heart as I sit in that isolation room praying my husband would get well.

The calmness helped me as I  search the Internet for information which brought this thought. Sin was like a parasite.   It starts as a thought, which we put aside thinking it is dormant till something, another thought, something we see, read or touch and then it explodes, taking over our senses and renders us helpless and we can even infect others when sin is reigning in us.   An alcoholic never thought they would become one with the first drink or even the second nor third one.  Sin grows as it get fed like a parasite does on our blood.  Parasites can kill unless treated.

James 1:13-15
13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

How grateful I am that God has put the prescription for our sin in I John 1:8-9 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.  He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all un righteousness.

Here comes the Krispy Kreme donut part.  Daily I would get some breakfast in the hospital cafe.  The first day I seen these wonderful looking chocolate covered donuts, tried one, it was so good I had another before I left.  Next morning, another donut and next morning one again.  The lady who checked me out commenting that she was glad I found their donuts good, she said they are Krispy Kreme,  my absolute favorite.   Those donuts were not from the Lord, He would not tempt me.  They were my parasite (food) which is what I usually turn to during times of stress.   I could eat them every morning, probably more then one.  Through the years I have given up lots of different food items that are not healthy for me but this lesson was how easily I was enticed back into gobbling a few donuts down.  To me they were like strong drink is to an alcoholic.
I even said to Ace when he got to where he could eat, honey they have donuts in the cafe, you want one?  Thank God he said no, and finished eating his healthy heart breakfast.  I felt a little like Eve in the garden, come on honey, just a bite!!!!!!

I don't know what your parasite is but I know one of mine is foods that is not healthy for me.  The enemy of my soul wants me weak, malnourished with a cloudy mind so he can continue to tempt me over and over.  The only way I have found that works good for me is to flee from the sin if possible.  It was possible, I did not go to the cafe again for breakfast.  I was tempted but the thought of that donut being a parasite helped me to resist.

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

                                        DO YOU HAVE A PARASITE?????

  1. Glad Ace is doing better. I'm praying for you guys.

I think we fight parasites everyday... the minute we drive out the driveway and even after we get home... It's a battle out there... Even though I know He's already won the battle... but who doesn't love a donut?

  2. I just asked as you commented on my blog how Ace was doing. So glad to hear that he is recovering. thanks for the lesson in malaria, but more importantly, the great application about sin. I have a few parasites that need eradicated. Fortunately, eating donuts is not one of them. :)

  3. Praise God for He is our Healer!

I thank God for Ace doing better and on his way to recovery.

Oh, I love Krispy Kreme the original one with only glaze on. But of course, being in the third world, our budget is tight that even if we like a bite, we refrain. We can give in only if someone offers to share.

Anyway, Betty. You got me thinking. I am a workaholic and it gets in the way with Sabbath and quiet walks. That is one of my greatest parasite. Satan uses it on me to keep me away from my "still chair" and I have to push satan away and tell him. Go away, I need time with my Lord and keep the OCD tied down. OH, no!

This is a good spanking, Betty. and all from your study of the parasites in those kinds of mosquitoes... and the humor is contagious.

    Thanks and blessings.

  4. My parasite involves shoes. I can't seem to get enough of them.

Grateful for your hubby's continued progress.

  5. Floyd you and Bill always bless my heart when you stop and read what this simple women wrote. Bill if I am not mistaken it was you who liked brocolli over twinkles and now we learn donuts is not a vice either. I know in most churches if the folks find out the pastor favorite food, someone will make it for him at every banquet or get together that requires food.

Cannot thank you two brother enough for the prayers you lifted up for my man. Every day he gets a little better. God's blessings on you both.

  6. Lolita, you humble me in the fact the few words I posted would touch your heart. You are a sensitive woman for the Lord.

Humor is contagious isn't it. It is so easy to be down trodden, the world is a mess and all of us have family not saved, all of us have medical problems.

Oh my sister wish I lived chose to you and we would share a Krispy Kreme donut. I love the ones with just a plain glaze on them too. When my husband was a youth pastor our teen group would sell those donuts to get money for camp. Back then 2 dollar a box and they let us keep a dollar on each box sold. Our daughter in Papua New Guinea says the prices have went up so much, they are struggling to make ends meet and will have to do some extra traveling to raise more support to be able to go back. I know we have lost three churches that use to support us in the last six months. Thing are tough all over. Someone was gracious to give me some extra cash to buy food as I sit with my husband. Now I wish I had not wasted it on such short lived pleasures. Blessin my wise hearted friend.

  8. Wow, Betty. What a hard journey you all have been on. So glad your husband is recovering. I love how you reminded us of that connection of how sin is like a parasite. It can so easily sneak up on us.

Thanks again for your encouragement yesterday.

  9. Betty-
Sorry its taken me a while to get here so I could read this "eye/heart opening" post of yours!!

I have been in the trenches with my Chronic Pain-getting injections, hoping for needed relief, feeling some of the Sciatic Nerve grow quiet~~ then along comes a Weather change for us~ Needed Rain!!

God knows we have needed the Rains and nobody complains-instead we stand around, drinking in the glorious beauty of Rain falling from the Heavens~~ then my Parasite showed up--I forgot once more about How Chronic Pain and Weather related Air Pressure truly seem to hate each other and so my Pain soared off the charts..

I picked up "pieces" from each comment left on your post and related them to this Pain I live with---

This is a hard journey-plain and simple. I would love to grab for a "Krispy Kreme Donut Cure" to rid my body of the Pain-but that isn't possible.

Ace went to minister-having no clue a parasite would follow him home. I climbed that tree, never dreaming my life would be forever changed.

But God has been steadfast as HE stands beside me, helping me get through these horrible bouts of Pain.

I know God has wrapped HIS arms around Ace-and is there with both of you as recovery continues.

So you had some donuts-nothing wrong in that. I too would love to pack a store up and send it to Lolita!!

Our faith is tested- to the max and then back again. But what a glorious feeling it is to know, WE are NEVER ALONE..

Love and blessings to both of you.

  10. Betty,

I've had malaria before too. The chills, fever, nausea.. your poor husband. Where did you go? (I forget) Glad he's feeling better. Mmm, krispy kreme doughnuts are delicious.

Regarding your comment, I can imagine the same feelings of longing and missing, during new school year bustles once my kids are gone. I still buy myself a new notebook each year too. :)

James is a rich book, and very convicting, huh?

  12. Martha, so sorry your pain showed up...Thank God He did too. You are very preceptive...you get more out of my post then I do.

Ace has finished with his meds, still gets tired easily but we are on the road next week visiting missionaries. Very thankful he is feeling up to traveling. It is not good for men to lay around and do nothing...

Praying for you my friend. Blessings

  13. Jennifer, great, another Krispy Kreme friend. That week of sweets has left me craving sweets. A couple of friends took me to a Women of Faith conference and we ate junk every day....pray for my will power to kick in. I am convinced sugar is a killer, but also know having it in moderation is the key. Thanks for stopping by. Blessings.

  15. Betty this is fantastic. I love your analogies and really too, appreciate the lesson on Malaria. Absolutely fascinating. I am so sad to hear though, of Ace's illness. Praise God he is stronger all the time.
I'm exhausted tonight so I hesitate to delve into the long list of parasites I employ.
One though, was Starbucks. I was going 8 times a week. I knew back in May, that there would be no Starbucks on my medical mission in June. So I asked God to help me and He was so faithful. I now drink Starbucks once or twice a week and truly enjoy it. I always go to the one at Safeway, so not only did the Starbucks bill go way down, our grocery bills were cut by hundreds. I had allowed Starbucks to eat away at my pocket book as well as my health, in that I would get debilitating migraines if I didn't have my daily caffeine. Tomorrow I will prayerfully consider what else could be eating at me....thank you for your wonderful post! Every blessing!

I, too, love KK doughnuts. As I drive husband to the dr. in Atlanta, we pass the KK store and the HOT doughnut sign is usually ON! I love blueberry cake doughnuts!

  21. Betty,

Thank you for seeing Jesus in me, and in the waiting too. That blesses me.

I lived in Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire with my family, learning language and loving peoples. Yes, I loved my time there and share stories of baboons, termites and civil wars.

    Have a great week.
